How a Froe is Used

A froe (also spelled frow) is an L-shaped tool with a wooden handle and an iron wedge-shaped blade. The blade is struck with a wooden club to drive it through a piece of wood. It is used to split wood into narrow boards. It is needed to make shingles or barrel staves (narrow boards needed to cover the side of barrels). A froe was used to make the riving or clapboard on the Spray house.
