Spray Plantation, Near the St. Mary's River, Maryland, l661

Tables and shelves hold cooking and eating utensils. Among them are plates, bowls, glasses, mugs and jugs. Most of the vessels are pottery but one large plate is made from a gray metal called pewter.

A flat-bottomed bowl is used to hold milk. It is shallow so cream in the fresh milk will rise quickly to the top. The cream is skimmed off and churned into butter.

A pewter plate sits on middle shelf
to the left

Wood planks make a table,
called a dresser. This is where food
is prepared, or dressed.

Several people can drink from this mug, called a tig.
In l661 it is common for people
to share dishes and eating utensils at meals.

The Sprays make some soap but also purchase it
from England.
