DESCRIPTION: Historic Sotterley Plantation is the sole surviving tidewater plantation in the state of Maryland, and was home to the Bowles, Plater, Briscoe and Saterlee families. In the 18th century, Sotterley prospered as a thriving port of entry under the Platers. George Plater III was the sixth governor of Maryland. Sotterley was the site of a busy steamboat landing in the 19th century. The plantation charts the rise and maturation of the tobacco culture in Maryland from the slave era through emancipation and serves as a learning laboratory to explore Maryland's social and economic trends from colonial times to the present.
Sotterley's environmental resources include an estuarine shoreline, woodland trails, meadows, an antebellum orchard, and formal gardens. It has authentic 18th and 19th century architectural holdings highlighting plantation life, including a customs house, smokehouse, spinning cottage, brick necessary and plantation schoolhouse.
Tours by trained docents encompasses three sites: The Manor House, The Slave Quarter, and The Plantation Landscape. Nature trails, a self-guided walking tour, and special demonstrations are also available. Sotterley has a gift shop, restroom facilities, and picnic tables. Groups are encouraged to bring bag lunches, although box lunches are provided with advanced notice. The farm is located 20 minutes before St. Mary's City. An overnight trip would enable students to combine visits to Sotterley and Historic St. Mary's City. Inquire about overnights when reservations are made.
