DESCRIPTION AND RESOURCES

DESCRIPTION: The Colonial Farm is a living history museum located on the Potomac River edge of Piscataway Park in Accokeek, Maryland. The museum depicts a small southern tobacco farm on the eve of the American Revolution. Docents use reproduction tools and implements to work in the fields, gardens, and structures. The site includes a farmhouse, original tobacco house, heirloom varieties of crops and plants, and a view of Mount Vernon directly across the river. Historic breeds of livestock roam the site as they did 200 years ago. Educational programs include "The Tidewater's Living History," "Life of a Colonial Child," A Land and History Program," and "The Explorers Program." Two farms are connected by nature trails and hands-on activities. The National Colonial Farm focuses on survival and a child's view of life on a middle class farm in 1775. The Ecosystem farm focuses on living well today, building on lessons from history, and dealing with current environmental issues as they relate current social studies issues and everyday choices. Parts of the programs change with the seasons and with the demands of daily farm life. Period farmhouse, barn, livestock, and crops; kitchens with open hearth.
