DESCRIPTION AND RESOURCES

DESCRIPTION: A comprehensive history museum for Alexandria and northern Virginia. The Greek Revival building (1839) was built as part of the Lyceum movement and was the city's first intellectual and cultural center. Other exhibits change. The museum offers the "Inside Old Town," a guided tour in which students role play early Alexandrians and experience the city through the character's eyes. Roles include milliner, tinsmith, blacksmith, dressmaker, washerwoman, merchants, farmers, etc. The teacher should rent the Outreach Kit (cost is $15) ahead of time and use it to assign roles and prepare the students to play the parts of the townspeople. Need advance notice for hearing and vision impaired students. May borrow kit even if not planning tour. Can combine with tour of Carlyle House and Gadsbuy's Tavern Museum. Can also book tour through Doorways to Old Virginia (a tour company).

An hour and a quarter hands-on program inside the museum is now available for Grades K-3. "Getting A Feel for Long Ago" encourages students to learn about the past by handling objects from the museum. In November or December, l999, a "search and find" scavenger hunt activity will also be available for students to use to learn about objects in the museum. Reservations can be made all year around. Please call and leave a message with a clear message including name and phone number and specific times you can receive a call back. You can also fax your initial information and requests.
