DESCRIPTION AND RESOURCES

DESCRIPTION: The museum was originally one tavern and one hotel dating from 1770 and 1792. Today the museum interprets public life in the 18th century. It includes a tap room, ice well, sleeping rooms, and 2 ballrooms. In one of these, George Washington held his birthday dances. Students role play activities and use primary sources such as 18th century newspapers ads. Book months in advance. May be combined with tour of Lyceum and Carlyle House. Can also book tour through Doorways to Old Virginia, a tour company (703-548-0100).
