DESCRIPTION AND RESOURCES

DESCRIPTION: The museum presents a history of fire fighting. There are 40 pieces of apparatus dating from 1822 - 1954 and a 1938 fire truck. Students will see a ten minute film on fire prevention. The museum has the largest working telegraph system in the U.S. It is the largest fire museum on the East Coast.

Children will be able to try on child-size gear, engage in a 911 activity and have playtime in the discovery room. There are two additional activities: for Grades K-2 an activity called "Bucket Brigade" for 10 to 40 students, it takes one hour and the cost is $3 per student. For Grades 3-5 there is "Rattle Watch" in which students learn to compare and contrast communication technology, to call in emergencies, to design a fire escape plan for a house, and to visit the fire safety house. It is designed for 10-40 students, takes 90 minutes and the cost is $4 per student. At least one adult per 10 students is desirable.
