DESCRIPTION AND RESOURCES

DESCRIPTION: This restored 1753 mansion, home of John Carlyle, was the site of the meeting of General Braddock and 5 colonial governors to plan strategy for meeting the costs of the French and Indian War. Artifacts and furnishings of the era are displayed to show social, economic and political life of Colonial Alexandria. There are two educational programs to choose from: "Discovery Through Trash" has students analyze items from the site. The program "Don't Get Weary" explores the lives of African Americans who lived at the Carlyle House during the 18th century. Each tour is one hour. Can combine tour with Gadsby's Tavern Museum, Lyceum and Alexandria Archeology. If you wish to combine and visit multiple sites, Ruth Reeder at Alexandria Archeology (703-838-4399) will coordinate your visit.
