DESCRIPTION: The Canal Clipper (a canal boat 90 ft. long and 12 ft. wide) has traded its cargo of coal for passengers, and its current voyage (1/2 mile) is considerably shorter than the 184.5 mile trip to Cumberland, but some things remain the same. The boat is still pulled by mules and the captain still obeys the four mile per hour speed limit. Park rangers assume the roles of "Canallers" and dress as working people of the 1870s. They present the story of the canal which opened for navigation in 1830 and ceased operations in 1924.
The trip originates at Great Falls Tavern. Several films available at Great Falls Tavern. Write to park to waive entrance fee. Must arrive 15 min. early or you will lose your tickets. Can also ride canal boat in Georgetown. See entry for C & O Canal Historical Park (Georgetown).
