DESCRIPTION AND RESOURCES

DESCRIPTION: Clean running water will never be taken for granted again by students who visit the Baltimore Public Works Museum which is housed in an historic pumping station. Students discover how 19th century cities survived without clean water, indoor plumbing, adequate roads and bridges, and later learn how these needs are met daily in the ever expanding Baltimore Metropolitan area.

The museum uses a combinations of exhibits, multi-media shows, and a building arts area called "Construction Set" to help students understand these largely "invisible" services. Younger students will enjoy crawling through real manholes at "Streetscape"-an outdoor display that recreates a street intersection raised above ground.

Exhibits include: "What's Beneath the Streets?", "Tunneling Beneath Baltimore;" "Lego City;" and "Streetscape." Mini-exhibits include: "Taking the Lead . . . Baltimore's Directors of Public Works," "Women in Public Works History," "Excellence in Environmental Engineering-1990," and "The First 100 years . . . Living in Baltimore."

There has been recent construction around the museum. Be sure to clarify directions when making arrangements. Mr. Pompa will fax or mail an accurate map. Spring is a very busy time for the museum, so make your arrangements as early as possible. On the other half of the day, for a related experience, the museum staff can arrange for a class to visit Montebello, which is a clean water plant; there students can see the process of obtaining clean water and providing it to peoples" homes.

May be included with a visit to the other Baltimore sites such as the Star Spangled Banner Flag House, or Baltimore City Life Museum.
