Byzantium Online  A collection of links, documents and grapics devoted to the study of the Byzantine Empire.
Exploring Ancient World Cultures  An online text that covers Near East, India, Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, Islam, and Europe. Uses famous documents. Reading level is high school and up.
Historical and Cultural Atlas Resource from Oregon State System of Higher Education

Incas: Empires of Mystery The "Empires of Mystery" exhibit at the Florida International Museum in St. Petersburg puts on display 300 artifacts, offering a glimpse of civilizations that flourished and died over thousands of years in Peru.
The Maya Astronomy Page
Maya Adventure  The Science Museum of Minnesota has developed an excellent site that combines research on the Maya culture with science skills.
Mesoamerican Photo Archives  Contains beautiful pictures with descriptive captions of the major sites of Mesoamerican Precolumbian History. Be sure to scroll all the way down to see the great set of links.
Yaxuna Archaeology Site  Visit this interesting dig on the Yucatan Peninsula. Includes movies and Quicktime VR shots.

Harrapa  A graphically oriented site that describes the ancient culture of Harrapa in the context of moderb day India. Be sure to check out the around the Indus in 90 Slides section.

Ancient Egypt Exhibit - Houston Museum of Fine Arts
Egypt's Antiquities  A well developed site that includes an extensive glossary, virtual museum and short histories.
Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology (University of Memphis)
Pyramids:The Inside Story  The PBS-NOVA joint site. An in-depth exploration of the great pyrmids. Includes archaeological digs, short histories and virtual explorations. Slow access.
The Theban Mapping Project  The official site describing the ongoing work of Dr. Weeks and other sites in the Valley Of The Kings.

Ancient Europe

French Cave PaintingsOver 300 paintings and engravings in the Chauvet Cave dating to the Paleolithic era (between 32,000 and 30,000 years ago).

Ancient Greece

Aesop's Fables Online Collection  Hundreds of fables including background and some read aloud in Real Audio.
In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great Trace the creation of the Greek empire and discover the truth behind the legend of Alexander -- a young man who conquered the known world before he reached the age of 30 -- with this informative site.
The Ancient City of Athens
Coinage in Corinth  National Museum of American History's virtual exhibit. (This site is just waiting to be developed into a lesson plan!)
Classical Greece Gods, People, And Places Dictionary  A hypertext dictionary with some picts.
Metis: QTVR Interface for Ancient Greek Archaeological Sites   A collection of QuickTime VR movies that allow users to explore the ruins of nineteen ancient Greek archaeological sites, including the Acropolis in Athens and the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina.
The Perseus Project  An online study of Ancient Greece designed for undergraduate students. Extensive.

Ancient Middle East

Israel's History  Contains the history of the HebrewPeople from Biblical times to the present. Published by the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
The Code of Hammurabi  The entire thing. One big document. Have a few days? Some heavy copying and pasting might make an interesting lesson.
The Jerusalem Mosaic  Contains virtual tours of Jerusalem through different time periods. Be sure to clicl on highlighted terms to get more in-depth background information.
The Search for UbarUbar, a rich and fabulous trading center of ancient Arabia rose out of the desert and then mysteriously vanished back into the sands. Now, centuries after Ubar's disappearance, a combination of hard work, dedicated research, and remote sensing technology has perhaps unraveled this ancient mystery.

Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome in North Africa  This student and adult friendly site describes the work of an archaelogist as he digs up the ancient city the Romans called Lepcis Magna. Included is a "kid's zone", virtual tour, site plans, historical background and downloadadble dig reports.

Roman Board Games  Ever what the Romans did when they weren't out conquering or being conquered? This site describes a few Roman Board Games, including how to play them.
Roman Ball Games  From the same folks who brought you "Roman Board Games", this site shows how to play several Roman Ball Games as well as the history behind each one.
