Teaching Ideas

Martin Luther King Day

This was submitted by Laura Zionts

I observed a student teacher who did a wonderful lesson with preschool children who were in a special education class (each had more intensive support needs). She gathered them on the infamous "carpet circle" and told a very age-appropriate version of Rosa Parks using the Fisher Price Bus and its "Little People" in various skin tones. Then she put several of these buses and "Little People" in a center for the remainder of the day. The children used dramatic play to create their own stories. They seemed to enjoy this activity. She also arranged an easel in the art center and one of the choices that day was to paint using a giant bus stencil. As the children (who chose to) painted, they talked about the story they'd heard. The lesson was wonderful for encouraging dramatic play, communication skills, etc.
