Books

  • Use the book Who Walks on This Halloween Night? by Harriet Ziefert to learn different Halloween characters. Make up a motion for each of the characters and have the children act them out while singing the song that is printed at the end of the book.

  • Read the story Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman to the children.  We spend a week or two on this and act out the story over and over with different kids playing different roles.  On Halloween day, we act out the story one more time, but change the characters from witch, ghost, vampire, etc. to the actual costumes that the children are wearing.  We videotape this and pass it around to the parents who were not able to be present.

If you are unfamiliar with the story, it is about a witch who grows a pumpkin to make pumpkin pie for Halloweeen.  The pumpkin is too big for her to pull off the vine.   A ghost, a vampire, a mummy, and a bat all happen along to help her.  Each time another character comes on the scene, the text is repeated and they all end by saying, "drat" when they can't get the pumpkin off the vine.  Finally, the bat comes up with an idea that works, and they all enjoy pumpkin pie.  The illustrations are incredible and the repetitive text is great fun.

Technology

You can download this Halloween Poem in Word for Windows format. When you print it and cut the pages on the dotted line, it assembles into a cumulative story that ends up looking like the picture below.

You can download this Intellipics game that tells the story Go Away Big Green Monster! (by Ed Emberly, 1992).--Maria Palavecino, Carol Micit, and Terry Gradwohl
