Grocery Store
- Take a field trip to the grocery store. We had a great experience.
We saw the inner workings of the butcher area, produce coolers,
and bakery. Thank you, Weis Market! For a thank you card, we
sponge painted a bunch of circles to resemble grapes and wrote
"Thank you berry much."
- Set up your creative play area as a grocery store. Use a
picture sequence to help the children learn the steps involved
in "pretending" at the grocery store.
This idea was learned at the presentation, "Positive
Behavioral Support" by Ilene Schwartz, Bonnie McBride, and
gail Joseph at the DEC conference, 1997.
Fruits and Vegetables
- Make fruit juice or fruit salad and vegetable soup on different
days. Use these experiences as a more concrete way to sort fruits
and vegetables. "Does a potato go in the soup or the juice?
Yes, the soup. It is a vegetable."
- Apple turnovers - crescent rolls, apples, sugar, cinnamon.
Kids cut up their own apples and mix in bowl with sugar and cinnamon.
Make their own turnover. Bake.
Snacks
Pizza
- Use this Intellipics game to step through a pizza recipe.
Pizzarcpe.zip
contains
pizzarcpe.ipc which is an Intellipics game in Windows format.
Intellipics for Windows or Intellipics Player is required to
use this file.
- Turn this into a unit on restaurants, culmintating in a field
trip to a local pizza joint
- Set up the drammatic play area as a pizza restaurant
- Have the kids practice making pizzas using english muffins
or bagels for the crust. Then invite the parents to your newly
established pizza restaurant. Have the kids take their orders
and serve up the pizzas.
- I bought a $10 pizza oven toy at KB Toys. It had a four slice
pizza with a choice of toppings, pizza cutter, and even a timer
that would really go off. It was the best investement ever!
