Externship opportunity for MCPS secondary counselors with Kaiser Permanente, CVS, Asbury Methodist Village, and Adventist Home Health.


 

Program Highlights


  • Discover ways of increasing relevancy and real-world application of careers in the health care industry for your students.
  • Upgrade your knowledge, skills, and understanding of the business environment and how your guidance and directional skills impact students' ability to make career decisions.
  • Upon completion of the externship and presentation of your learnings, you will be eligible to earn one credit toward the Advanced Professional Certificate (APC), or submit the credit for National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).
 

Purpose

Allied Heath Externship

To connect counselors with employers in the allied health field to expand counselor's knowledge and understanding of various career opportunities that they can use in their career counseling with students.

Industry externships help educators gain a greater understanding of the business world, the chance to upgrade their own knowledge and skills about how academic concepts are used in the workplace, and a better understanding of the careers available for Montgomery County's youth in the healthcare industry.

CVS Caremark is an innovative company that is reinventing pharmacy for better health. They are continuously developing new ways to improve access for patients, promote better health outcomes and control payer costs.

8-10 openings will be made available.

The externship will be for 1 day. A general outline of what will occur is:

  • An orientation to the company and the various jobs and career pathways available.
  • Observations of various departmental functions including the pharmacy, back room operations, and the 'front of the house'.
  • Sharing of new learning; how to best use the information they have learned in their roles within the school system; evaluation of the experience; next steps and wrap up

Definition of Allied Health

While definitions vary for this sector, one estimate reported allied health professionals make up 60 percent of the total health workforce. They work in health care teams to make the health care system function by providing a range of diagnostic, technical, therapeutic and direct patient care and support services that are critical to the other health professionals they work with and the patients they serve.

Allied health professionals are involved with the delivery of health or related services pertaining to the identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services; rehabilitation and health systems management, among others.

Allied health professionals include, dental hygienists, diagnostic medical sonographers, dietitians, medical technologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, radiographers, respiratory therapists, and speech language pathologists.
