Cost
$76 full, (for students needing financial assistance, principal completes form received from OSA - Subject: Outdoor Education Resources) listing students’ names, etc.
**** Extra staff meals: 1 adult meal for every 6 students is provided for in the original cost.  All additional adult meals required will result in additional fees.

Insurance for day student - $1.60/day

Permission Slips - MCPS 345-7 or copy form from back of handbook.

Alphabetical Lists - Two lists for nurse: one boys, one girls, both alphabetical.

H.S. Counselors - Work permit, permission slip, bag lunch, study time.

Coordinator
Spends first night, leaves at 4:00 p.m. other days, or 3:00 p.m. on course instruction nights.

Night Activities
Schedule coordinator for first night - planetarium, campfire or night hike. Night hike material (life savers) provided by school.

Staffing -
1-15 for overnight stipends
1-6 for staff and counselor meals

Transportation
Send typed trip tickets to Field Trip Office, Shady Grove Depot at least three weeks in advance. Call (301-670-8270) if you have questions.

Count
Week before outdoor education, call Smith Center with numbers of students, counselors and adults (as near as possible). A schedule should be sent to the coordinator at this time.

Hike-In
Smith Center
- call when buses leave school. Coordinator will meet the bus at Lake Frank parking area..
Summit Lake - hike will begin at the end of the Buggy Trail.
Skycroft - hike will begin at the entrance to Skycroft.
Epipens/Inhalers must be carried by students. Comfortable, weather appropriate clothing/shoes. Carry nothing.

Meals
Bag lunch first day, drinks (milk, juice or water) provided. May want to provide extra cafeteria lunches for students.
One teacher in charge of K.P. throughout the program.
Fewest possible tables (12/ table at Summit Lake; 8/table at Smith Center; 8/ table at Skycroft
Meal count at the Smith Center done by K.P. teacher. Please provide a count of students and adults to be turned in to our cafeteria manager upon arrival.

Special Diets
Special needs must be noted on permission slip, including vegetarians. The school staff will have access to a microwave to heat frozen foods for children who must substitute foods.

Menu - Food allergies must be noted on permission slip - very limited choices in kitchens. Students are best provided for by bringing their own food.

Medications
Meds must be packed by school/health tech. Meds and permission slips must be delivered directly to health tech or nurse by 10:30 a.m. of the first day. PLEASE DO NOT carry permission slips on hike-in.

Health Tech/Nurse
On site from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Skycroft). School needs night nurse on staff. We need as much notice as possible for unusual medical situations.

Mail Call - Suggest at dinner to save instructional time.

Meadowside Nature Center
Closed Monday. Time saved for Smith Center - 9:15-10:00 a.m. and 1:00-1:45 p.m.

Teaching Activities
Please save arts and crafts or cooking activities for recreation time or evening activities.
Predator/Prey must have a certified instructor.
Confidence Course must have 1 certified instructor for every 10 students.


Equipment - Bring all materials needed with you, including recreation equipment. TV/VCR available .

Confidence Course
Maximum of 10 students per group. Only certified instructors and only sixth grade appropriate activities.

Animal Feeding
Animals at the Smith Center will be fed by the Center staff unless school requests to feed the animals.

Other Stuff
No gum or candy. 
Observatory/Planetarium available at the Smith Center only.
Flags/Weather. 
Hair dryers.
Students are to bring NO MONEY with them..
New clothing, boots, and bedding are available to students in need. Please let the coordinator know sizes in advance.
