Grade 3

What your child will learn

Students in Grade 3 use mathematics to model real world situations.

  • In Unit 1, students organize, interpret, describe, and compare information using tables, pictographs, bar graphs, and patterns. Students use flexible methods of computation that involve grouping numbers in a variety of ways. Students demonstrate understanding that the base 10 number system is based on groups of ten.
  • In Unit 2, students study standard units of measurement and their relationship to each other. Students estimate and determine area and perimeter of shapes and analyze the similarities and differences between them.
  • In Unit 3, students explore and model multiplication and division concepts. Students explain and apply the concept of inverse operation as it relates to multiplication and division. Students will demonstrate mastery of multiplication facts for 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10. The use of estimation techniques to determine solutions are also included in this unit.
  • In Unit 4, students connect their earlier work with two-dimensional figures to three-dimensional figures. Students investigate angles, symmetry, and congruency of geometric figures and real world objects.
  • In Unit 5, students model and compare fractions using numerals, regions, sets, and number lines. Students investigate and solve money problems through one hundred dollars. Students continue their multiplication and division strategies and represent expressions, equations, and inequalities. In addition, students explore the concept of probability.
  • In Unit 6, students continue their study of appropriate measurement tools to solve problems. Students use estimation and measurement strategies to help determine length, weight, time, and capacity. In addition, students investigate ordered pairs on a coordinate plane
