Unit 4

Unit 4 is typically a five-week unit taught in February and March.

Unit Overview

The study of geometry provides an opportunity for young students to investigate patterns and relationships of shapes and objects. In this unit, students study geometric reasoning and spatial sense through hands-on interactive experiences. Students begin by identifying and representing two and three-dimensional figures. They compare two- and three-dimensional figures using attributes of those figures. For example, students investigate which two-dimensional figures are found in a cylinder. They draw simple plane figures such as triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles. Finally, students use their knowledge of geometry to begin developing an understanding of congruency. Through manipulation of objects, students identify shapes that appear to be congruent.
