As part of the grant activities,
participating teachers worked with their school teams to
create and implement lessons and activities that use
technology to support early literacy. Lessons and activities
that have primarily reading outcomes can be found in the
Literacy Activities
and Lessons section. Lessons
that also support MCPS curricular units in other content
areas con be found in the Integrated
Reading & Content Area
section. In addition, some teachers wrote descriptions
of what their classrooms look like during these lessons. The
Windows into
Classrooms section will give
you a glimpse into classrooms and allow you to read about
such lessons in action.
Lessons that support literacy and MCPS
Kindergarten Science or Social Studies
units. After a visit to the farm, Kindergartners use a
KidPix template to match pictures to words
on the "word wall". Students create self portraits in Kid Pix
then combine them in a Slide Show to celebrate
diversity. Students work cooperatively to create a book
that teaches others about planting and caring for
bush beans. In this center activity Early Emergent and
Emergent readers use My First Incredible Amazing
Dictionary to practice identifying initial
consonant sounds and learn facts about farm
animal. Lessons that support literacy and MCPS First
Grade Science or Social Studies units. This lesson encourages students to use the
Internet to collect information about worms, and
can be used in conjunction with the MCPS First
Grade Rocks, Sand and Soil Science Unit. . It
allows for whole group exploration, as well as
partner or small group research. . . Lessons that support literacy and MCPS Second
Grade Science or Social Studies units. The tales of Curious George are guaranteed to
bring smiles and laughter to any classroom of young
children. The following activity uses this familiar
character to help first and second graders learn
about other places as they visit the Curious George
Is Curious About North America web site. Students use electronic and print resources to
find information and compare the characteristics of
different butterflies and moths. Young lepidopterists (scientists who study
butterflies) use observations and print and
electronic resources to create a slideshow that
teaches about the life cycle of a butterfly. Working in cooperative groups, students learn
more about migration using the Journey North
website, First Connections: Golden Book
Encyclopedia and nonfiction books. Then, they
use the information they have learned to write a
newspaper article about the Monarch migration. Students use Kid Pix to classify liquids
into two categories: those that are safe to drink
and those that are not. Next they use print and
electronic resources to verify their
classifications. Your students will enjoy researching examples of
balancing in the "real" world when they are working
to create an informative slideshow! Kid Pix is an excellent tool for students
to use to communicate understanding with symbols,
pictures and words. After weighing several objects on a balance
scale, students read to perform a task and create a
picture that illustrates their findings.
