Foreign Language Immersion Programs

Language immersion is an educational approach in which students are taught the curriculum content through the medium of a second language.

There are both partial and total immersion programs, beginning in Kindergarten, and lasting through Grade 8.

  • In partial immersion programs approximately one half of the day is spent learning subjects such as science and math in the immersion language
  • In total immersion programsall of the core subjects are taught in the immersion language.

The foreign language is not taught explicitly, but used as the language of instruction so that students learn the language while learning the content of the curriculum. There are immersion programs in French, Spanish and Chinese, and seven immersion programs are at the elementary level.
