Maryland High School Assessment (MHSA)
High School Assessment (HSA) & PARCC Information
Students who took an Algebra 1 and/or English 10 test prior to 2016-2017, either HSA or PARCC, are not required to pass these tests.
Algebra 1 and English 10 HSA tests ended in summer 2015; taking these tests is no longer possible. Students enrolled in Algebra 1 and English 10 for the first time in 2016 – 2017 and after must pass those PARCC assessments. First-time PARCC test-takers in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 who graduate by summer 2018 satisfy the graduation requirement through participation and are exempt from completing a Bridge Plan(s). The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has established the passing score for both PARCC assessments.
- 725 - 2016 - 2017 through 2022 - 2023
Students must pass the Government HSA, meet the requirements through an approved combined score, or through the Bridge Plan. Students who entered grade 9 in 2012-2013 or earlier are not required to pass the Government HSA test. To meet the science testing requirement, students can pass the Biology HSA, meet the requirement through an approved combined score, meet through the Bridge Plan, or meet through participation if they took the test in the 2016-2017 school year. The Maryland Integrated Science Assessment is being field tested in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. Students who take the MISA during these school years will also meet the science requirement through participation. Students who take the MISA in 2019-2020 will be the first students required to pass the test. The Biology HSA and Biology Bridge Plan have been discontinued.

Meet assessment requirements with a combined score - students who entered grade 9 in 2012-2013 or a prior year do not need to pass the Government HSA but may apply their Government HSA score toward a combined score. Also, students that have previously taken HSAs in Algebra 1 and English 10 can have their scores applied to a combined score. In all, there are 11 approved combined score options for students. Students can also meet the PARCC testing requirement with a combined score on the two tests of 1450 or higher. Check with your child’s counselor for more information about combined scores.
Meet assessment requirements through the Bridge Plan. There are Bridge Plans for Algebra 1, English 10, and Government in 2018-2019.
