Comprehensive Health Education in Prekindergarten

Comprehensive health education standards and performance indicators are integrated throughout the elementary school experience. Prekindergarten teachers implement a variety of health education learning activities to promote and practice safe living skills and strategies important to respond to an emergency. Nutrition concepts relating food, senses, and growth are included during instruction to establish their importance to wellness.

Key Concepts

  • Safety and injury prevention—discuss how to respond to an emergency; practice the steps to call 911 and tell a adult to respond to an emergency
  • Nutrition and fitness—identify the relationship between foods and the senses; recognize that foods have different tastes (sweet, sour, bitter, salty); explain why the body needs food (to grow)
