Purchasing a Vehicle from ATF

For information of current car sales, please go to the Events Page.

Student looking under the hoodYou can purchase a vehicle — reconditioned by students in the Automotive Trades Foundation (ATF) program — at a used car sale held three times each year at a Montgomery County High School.

The ATF program is a licensed used car dealership. All vehicles are Maryland State Inspected prior to delivery. Those vehicles with less than 90,000 miles come with a 30-day or 1,000-mile warranty. All vehicles with 90,000 or more miles are discounted and sold in "as is" condition. Customers may preview and test drive the vehicles at the car sale. All people test driving vehicles must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

The ATF program processes all tag and title work. Tags and title fees and sales tax are in addition to the vehicle price.

Description of Lottery Drawing/To Purchase a Vehicle

If a customer wants to purchase a vehicle, he/she must complete a lottery ticket (1 ticket per household/address). The drawing will take place at 11 a.m. Customers must be present at the time of the drawing to purchase a vehicle.

As each customer's lottery ticket is drawn, he/she is asked which vehicle he/she wants to purchase. Customer then completes a tag/title/insurance information form. A deposit of $100 (check preferred; cash accepted) is taken at that time. The balance of the purchase price (plus tax, tag, title expenses) is paid at the time of delivery of the vehicle (generally 3 to 5 working days after the sale). Some vehicles may be delivered on the sale date.

All interested customers should stay for the entire drawing. We draw all names and give each customer a lottery number. That number is used to call the customers on the "back-up list." Occasionally a customer is not able to acquire financing and cannot take delivery of the vehicle. We then look at the "back-up list" for the next lowest number interested in that vehicle and call that customer.

How to Donate a Vehicle to ATF

A car which the students will rebuildThe Automotive Trades Foundation (ATF) program always welcomes vehicles for donation.

We generally accept donated vehicles that meet the following criteria:

  • Runs under its own power (excepting transmission problems)

  • No major accidents (such as a bent frame)

  • Has a clean unmarked title and lien release (if the vehicle had a loan)
Donor must also complete a Donation Authorization Form.

Evaluation:

Each vehicle is evaluated by students in the ATF program. Based on their evaluation, the vehicles will be utilized in one of three areas of instruction:

1. Complete renovation for use as part of the marketing program, to be sold to the general public

2. Partial renovation for sale as part of our wholesale operation

3. Use as a training aid in the automotive technology or automotive body repair courses.
