Multilingual parent outreach services are provided by ESOL bilingual and bicultural parent community coordinators and parent specialists to empower parents of ESOL students to engage in their children's education.
Schools with large numbers of English language learners have a parent services staff member assigned to them to provide regularly scheduled support servicesand assisst to:
- Conduct needs assessments at each school;
- Identify parent volunteers at each school;
- Organize a Parent Outreach Committee;
- Facilitate communications between school and international parents;
- Organize parent meetings in collaboration with the principal, ESOL teacher, counselor and parents from the outreach committee;
- Conduct workshops for parents on topics of interest to them;
- Attend Educational Management Team, Educational Support Team, School Improvement Team, or Individualized Education Program Team meetings and help the parents understand the language and the processes in these meetings;
- Provide assistance to international parents in the areas of students' and parents' rights and responsibilities, special education services, parent conferences, parental involvement, and information and referrals to services and resources;
- Conduct in-service training for school staff on how to work with the parents of English language learners,
- Provide individual and group parent programs on a variety of topics;
- Conduct Parent & Community Coordinator and Parent Specialist Service delivery evaluation for ESOL teachers and school administrators.
Schools that do not have a regularly assigned parent services staff member may request services by submitting a referral to the Division of ESOL/Bilingual Programs. |
