Code of Ethics for Translators and Interpreters
Working with Montgomery County Public Schools
Interpreters and Translators are hired and paid for one job only: to take the message of a speaker who uses a particular language and transmit that message to a listener in another particular language. Interpreters and Translators are always expected to conduct themselves professionally and ethically.
Code of Ethics
- I will accept work assignments for which I can reasonably expect to be linguistically and culturally competent.
- I will prepare for specific assignments by clarifying with MCPS personnel the intent of the assignment, any specific concepts or vocabulary that might have technical meaning with which I might be unfamiliar, and the expected range of outcomes for the assignment.
- I will provide accurate interpretation or translation of the message, material, or interaction, including cultural explanations to bridge gaps in understanding that relate to cultural expectations and contexts.
- If I am uncertain about the meaning or the context of information I will request clarification and examples to ensure that the intended information is conveyed as accurately as possible.
- I will maintain strict confidentiality about any information to which I am made privy. I will not discuss the matter with parents outside of the paid interaction without reporting the interaction to appropriate school system staff.
- I will decline any assignment that might present a conflict of interest.
- I will refrain from providing independent advice, information, guidance, or consultation, but will only convey the message provided by the primary participants in the interaction (e.g., parents and school system employees).
- I will show respect for all parties involved in the interaction and will behave in a professional manner.
- I will continue to develop my understanding of the policies, regulations, programs, and procedures of the Montgomery County Public Schools.
- I freely accept personal responsibility for fulfilling this Code of Ethics.
