UPDATED Role of the GT Liaison

Support Students:

• Advocate for traditionally underserved students to successfully participate in accelerated and enriched instruction
• Plan and implement the screening process for Gifted and Talented services
  • in the fall, for students new to MCPS in Grades 3, 4, and 5
  • in the spring, for all Grade 2 students
  • in the spring, for students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 who require rescreening
  • work closely with AEI Testing Assistant
• Share GT data for all students with classroom teachers and specialists
• Support principal in establishing and facilitating the school's accelerated and enriched instruction committee, which represents a variety of roles and perspectives, and is chaired by an administrator

Support Staff:

• Attend GT Liaison training
  • to ensure consistent implementation of the screening process including the administration of the Raven Progressive Matrices and InView
  • to learn implications for instruction based on data
  • to implement instructional strategies that will provide access to rigorous instruction for all
• Consult with principal to ensure that accelerated and enriched instruction is part of the School Improvement Plan
• Collaborate with staff development teacher to ensure that teachers are trained in William and Mary and Junior Great Books, and using the differentiation strategies presented in RD-40 Extending and Enriching Reading and Language Arts Instruction, and MA-68 Addressing the Needs of the Highly Able Student in Mathematics
• Inform staff of expected accelerated and enriched instruction within MCPS and in community

Support and Communicate with Parents:

• Distribute GT program and parent advocacy information via newsletter or website
• Disseminate information on MCPS gifted and talented and magnet programs and other community or university programs
• Conduct or facilitate training and information sessions on GT issues

Liaison with Accelerated and Enriched Instruction:

• Communicate with AEI about local school needs
