Elementary Reading Language Arts
Assessment

Assessment informs instruction. It is an ongoing process that helps teacher determine student strengths and instructional needs.

All students in K-2 will participate in mCLASS: Reading 3D benchmark assessments three times a year. New students to MCPS who enter school between the designated assessment windows will receive informal assessments to determine reading level.

Running records are another source for obtaining data. Running records help teachers understand reading strategies and processes being used by the student when reading. The teacher codes and analyzes the student's oral reading of a passage. Analysis of a running record is a valuable diagnostic tool to help determine instructional focus. The information gained from the running record is used in conjunction with teacher observations, writing samples, and oral or written responses to reading for the purpose of grouping.

MCPS Staff can access additional resources from the Instructional Management System (IMS).
