Common Threads
An intensive one-week institute aimed at deepening teachers' understanding of the arts as unique processes for learning, knowing, and expressing. Designed for middle and high school arts educators, the institute will explore a series of common threads running through all art forms, show deep structural relationships, and enrich learning and teaching the arts in Maryland schools. The institute's ultimate goal is enrichment of the teaching process to deepen the impact of arts experiences for students and to expand and refine educators' classroom practice to meet the challenge of the Maryland Essential Learner Outcomes. Common Threads will be held at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at University of Maryland College Park from June 25-29, 2001. The Maryland State Theater Festival
Held each year in February at Magruder High School in Rockville, Maryland. The event is planned by Michael D'Anna for Maryland High School Theater, a non-profit organization of Maryland High School Theater Teachers and Students. National Invitational Theater Festival
Will be held at the University of Maryland in the new Clarice Smith Center where top schools will present shows as well as where students will take workshops all week with artists in the theater field. The event is sponsored by the non-profit National Association of Secondary Theaters. This is a fledgling organization that has been growing for the past 5 years to almost 400 participants from up and down the East Coast. Many Maryland and Montgomery County Schools participate.
 
Folger Shakespeare Library Festival
The festival features many Maryland and Montgomery County Schools. Festivities begin the end of March each year. MCPS will be presenting To Gentlemen Of Verona.
 
MHST College Fair For Theater
This annual fair is held the first week of November each year.
 
MHST Improv Festival
This annual festival will be held at Blake High School the first Friday of October, 2001.
 
MHST Critics Review Program
This new program is looking for students who want to learn how to write reviews of plays performed by County High Schools. Please contact Christopher Berry at Blake High School about this program.
