DESCRIPTION: The largest literary collection in the world. Anyone over age 18 can use the Library. The building is an excellent example of Italian Renaissance architecture. Temporary exhibits (in Jefferson Building) rotate every 6 months. The continuing exhibit of American Treasures highlights items of Americana which the Library has collected, including films, television, maps, music, and a rough copy of the Declaration of Independence. Tours focus on architectural and historic aspects and the functions of the library. A 12 minute film highlights what the library does, what it collects and what it wants to do in the future. May want to include a visit to the US Capitol and/or National Archives. To reserve a tour call six months in advance. The U.S. Copyright Office is located on the fourth floor of the Madison building. Interesting items sent in for copyright in the last 100 years are on display, for example, Bert and Ernie, Barbie and Ken and other familiar items. Reservations are necessary; allow about 6 weeks during the year until March. Because of the high volume of out of town visitors in the spring, make reservations 6 months in advance if you want to schedule your tour for March, April or May. .
