Superintendent Recommends $1.49 Billion Capital Improvements Program
To accommodate growing enrollment numbers, nine schools would be expanded and a new elementary school and middle school would be built, according to Superintendent Jerry D. Weast’s recommended Capital Improvements Program. In the last two years, MCPS has grown by about 4,000 students, with most enrolling at the elementary level.
The six-year plan totals $1.49 billion. During an Oct. 28 press conference, Dr. Weast emphasized that this is a good time to build because of lower bond rates and decreased construction costs.
The Board of Education will hold a public work session on the plan on Nov. 5 and public hearings on Nov. 11 and 12.
