Abigail Muro, a fourth grade student at Somerset Elementary School, is one of 11 winners of the Maryland Municipal League essay contest, “If I Were Mayor, I Would …” Along with her family and teacher Meredith Lewis, Abigail will travel to the Maryland State House in Annapolis for a recognition ceremony, where she will receive a Governor’s Citation, a plaque and a $250 savings bond. Finalists were fourth graders Nicolas Bolatto and Christine McMakin of Ritchie Park Elementary School.

Dr. Robert Levy

Dr. Robert Levy, world-class trumpeter, composer, arranger and performer, paid a visit to Parkland Magnet Middle School to work with the band students. Levy, professor of music at Lawrence University in Wisconsin, spent time with the brass players, and the jazz and concert bands. Levy has made nearly 30 recordings and has performed throughout the U.S., in Canada, Australia, China and Jamaica. He has been at the forefront of contemporary music for more than 25 years and has premiered more than 100 works, many written expressly for him.

The winners of the 2009 Environmental Film Festival have been announced. First place went to Poolesville High School for its film, “Simply Green.” The three members of the Poolesville team each received a $700 scholarship to a summer film course at American University. Second place was awarded to Montgomery Blair High School for “Blazing a Green Trail” and third place went to Kennedy High School for “Eco-Runway.” Thirteen teams from seven high schools created films for the Earth Day screening. Brian Shilling, MCPS Outdoor Environmental Education Coordinator, organized the yearlong project along with the American Film Institute and American University.

Mohammed Iqbal, a second-year Montgomery County Students Information Technology Foundation Network Operations student, earned a perfect 900, on his first attempt, on the CompTIA Server+ certification test. Iqbal, a senior at Albert Einstein High School, takes afternoon classes at Thomas Edison High School of Technology, where he is enrolled in Network Operations Guided Research, a class taught by Jesse McGee. Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is the voice of the world’s information technology (IT) industry. In addition to his Server+ certification, Mohammed has also earned CompTIA  A+ and Network+ certifications.

Piney Branch Elementary School students learn about the environment during an Earth Day event at Montgomery College. Third and fourth graders made edible “landfills,” created terrariums from recycled materials, learned about natural resources and visited with critters such as geckos, lizards, turtles and spiders.
