Chinese Students, Staff Visit Frost Middle School

Chinese students and staff visited Frost Middle School as part of an exchange program started in 2009.

Robert Frost Middle School hosted 13 students and four teachers from Beijing #5 Middle School in Beijing, China, in early October. The schools formed an exchange program in 2009 to learn about each other’s educational and social cultures. The Chinese students stayed with host families from the Frost community and shadowed their counterparts during the school day at Frost. The Chinese teachers and Frost staff shared information about teaching methods and curriculum. Participants from both schools spent a day touring Washington, D.C. A group of Frost students and staff will visit China in spring 2012.

Two Paint Branch High School students are participating in The Washington Post’s 2011 Sports Writing Workshops, part of the newspaper’s Young Journalists Development Program. Senior Ryan Anderson, co-editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, Mainstream, and sophomore Daniel Johnson, a second-year Mainstream student, are working with Post reporters and editors to learn about writing feature stories, effective interviewing, covering sporting events and getting published. The workshops run through May 2012.

The music department at Parkland Magnet Middle School hosted a spaghetti dinner and raised $440 for Manna Food Center, a nonprofit organization that works to eliminate hunger in Montgomery County. The jazz band performed during the school’s second annual Music for Manna dinner.
