Task Definition: What am I supposed to do?

Objective:

Outbreaks of both viral and bacterial diseases are becoming a world health problem.  Identifying treatment for any of these diseases can be overwhelming much less deciding how to distribute the treatments and educating the populations on treatments and prevention.
The purpose of this project is to research possible solutions and identify potential obstacles associated with eradicating a deadly disease.  THIS PROJECT IS NOT ABOUT A SPECIFIC DISEASE BUT THE PLAN TO ERADICATE THE DISEASE THROUGH TREATMENT, EDUCATION AND PREVENTATIVE MEASURES.  Unlimited medicines to treat the disease will be available free of charge.

As a group you will decide where the medicines will initially be sent, where and how medicines are distributed from the initial site to the entire area, who is responsible for treatment and how the medicines will get to the affected population, form of medicines, n plus how you will educate the population about the treatment and prevention.  In addition to this realistic plan, each member will objectively identify obstacles to the plan and subjectively evaluate the chance of success of the plan.

Three students work together on this project.  Each student will be responsible for completing specific tasks for research and planning and graded accordingly.  It is important though that students share both research and planning information in order that the completed project reflects all research information and all aspects of the planning process.

1.  Research Information

As a group of 3, choose a less developed or underdeveloped country.  Suggested countries are countries in Africa, Central or South America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia or Russia.  You may also choose Washington, D.C. or Baltimore City.
Each student researches 2 of the following 6 topics and turns in a brief, typed report.
This report is in one’s own words and not merely downloaded. Include only information that may be relevant to your plan.

           Six Topics

Political climate and stability of existing government,  Also, identify any existing resources in the government that can help you with your plan or international organizations that already assist your country.

Health system and medical resources –Also, do any international medical associations already give aid to your country?
Transportation systems-roads, rail, airports, waterways, etc.  Include a map of your country identifying major cities and transportations systems.
Communication systems including languages plus T.V., radio, internet, etc.
Education including literacy rate
Cultural issues including religion and sexual or class discrimination

Keep a copy so you can use it for your plan.

2.  Devising a Plan

Each student is responsible for 1 part of the total plan.  Seriously consider your research and be sure to relate specific research to all parts of the plan.  The 3 parts of the plan are:

-distribution of free medicines in the country and to the affected population
-who does this, where do they do it and how does the medicine get to the people
-treatment – who treats the people, what form is the treatment and where are people
             treated
-prevention and education – who teaches prevention and education about the disease,
where do they teach this information and how do they teach this information

3. Obstacles to your plan
Each student includes 2 possible yet realistic obstacles to the entire plan.  Obstacles are  conditions that may hinder the success of your plan.  Again, relate obstacles to all research and the entire plan – not just your part of the research and the plan.
These obstacles are part of the typed assignment or included in the presentation if presented verbally.

4. Personal Opinion
Each student states a subjective opinion as to success of the plan considering all research, the plan and the obstacles to the plan.  Explain why you have this opinion in a short paragraph.
