Ms. Koster-Evans's third graders learned about portrait artwork by studying the portrait artwork of Leonardo DaVinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Chuck Close, Andy Warhol, and Mary Cassett. They learned that facial features can be determined mathematically. First the students created a realistic portrait using the mathematical proportions. Then a snowperson portrait was painted. Textural effects and patterns were added into hats, scarves and mittens. Facial features, the hats, mittens and scarves were added with oil pastels.
