Reading Together USA

Montgomery County Public Schools in partnership with the RFI Foundation, Comcast Cable and Montgomery County Government is implementing the Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network to boost reading proficiency of second grade students.  At Oakland Terrace, this program provides weekly one-to-one tutoring by fifth grade students using Reading Together materials.  Reading Together focuses on improving students’ vocabulary, background knowledge, fluency and comprehension.  Students are introduced to sequenced and leveled text in a variety of genres.  As students progress through the lessons, they are gradually engaged in independent reading.

Each lesson is structured to provide students with reading and writing opportunities, engagement with follow up discussions and activities, and support and feedback from their fifth grade partner.  Each lesson is scripted for the fifth grade tutor in a ten step format as follows:

Step One:  Warm-up Chat
Step Two:  Read Aloud
Step Three:  Prediction
*Step Four:  Reading a Passage & Progress Form Feedback
Step Five:  “Right There” (Literal) Questions
*Step Six:  Reread Passage & Progress Form Feedback
Step Seven:  Retelling
Step Eight:  “On My Own” (Interpretive) Questions
Step Nine:  Post Reading Activity
Step Ten:  Reflection Letter

*In Phase 2, students read tradebooks.

The students and their fifth grade tutors enjoy working together and the program has been very successful.
