MeasuringMeasuring
Students in Ms. Pearson's class used non-standard units to estimate distance. Students made outlines of their feet and then predicted how long 100 Kindergarten feet would stretch to celebrate the Hundredth Day of school. After predicting the distance, they placed their outlines on the floor and counted 100 of their outlines. They realized that it would take far fewer teacher feet to stetch the same distance. Students in Kindergarten measure with non-standard units before they are introduced to standard units such as centimeters and inches.
