Students use live weather data from the Oakland Terrace Homepage to explore Unit 1 indicators such as ordering numbers, subtracting with regrouping, and creating bar graphs.

|
Students collect data from the website.

They use their knowledge of place value to order the numbers.
|
The students create a bar graph using the data they have collected. Each time the students log on to the website, they will be presented with different data. The temperatures are current from weather stations all over the world. |

Students use the data they collect from the website to create a bar graph. Because the scale counts by 10, students need to carefully place bars using the line between the tens so that they accurately represent values such as 47. Students often struggle to represent values that do not fall exactly on one of the numbered lines.

After creating the bar graphs, students need to consider what the data informs them about the weather and climates in the different world cities. They will notice that sometimes, Addis Ababa and La Paz are some of the coldest cities shown even though they are relatively close to the equator. Students should hypothesize why. Discussions of northern and southern hemispheres, elevation, seasons and time of day should be discussed in order to connect math with science and social studies.
Indicators:
4.3.2.1 organize and display data using tables, pictographs, and bar graphs using appropriate scales
6.3.5.2 subtract two- and three-digit numbers with regrouping.
6.3.2.2 compare and order whole numbers through 10,000.
