Oakland Terrace Writing 5th Grade

Writing and the Arts ~ Grade 4
Students worked with the arts team and Ms. Royall to explore the theme of peace. They completed collages that represented peace, and then they wrote about their collages using descriptive language.

Peace is not loud, but soft like slow waves and dark green grass. Just like music, soft music. It’s like the dark sunset, not like the bright yellow day sun. The birds are not chirping, people not talking. It’s just quiet. That’s why it’s peaceful. The skies are blue like it is raining. My collage is dark like a rainy day.

The Ocean The ocean makes me feel peaceful. The sound of the waves makes me feel like I’m listening to slow relaxing music. The orange and yellow sand feels warm around my feet when I squish it. The warm wind and ocean waves wrap around my body like I am cuddling my blanket. The seaweed tickles my feet.

	My collage is calm because there is nothing but nature. There is a tree, a bush and a rock. I used some light colors and some dark colors. Light is a calm color. I think dark colors are rough. I like blue. I think that blue is peaceful. It is a sky color. The sky looks windy. I can imagine a whistling sound. It looks like no one is there making noise.

My Peaceful Place A sunny hill is my peaceful place because it reminds me of my warm and cozy bed in my room. It’s peace to me. Also a hill is a place for me to relax. On a hill nobody is there. It is quiet and calm. The sun shines on me and I feel at peace.

	The Collage The night is dark and the dark color reminds me when I go to sleep. Orange is my favorite color. Orange and yellow are peaceful to me because they remind me when it is a hot day, and I like the light colors in the sky in the summer.

A Peaceful Day

On a peaceful day, there is green grass, flowers, and the sky with a sun. The sky is blue and the sun is peaceful because the colors are purple and yellow. The flowers make me think of a summer hot day without any clouds in the air.

	Peaceful Collage Peace to me is a place like the ocean. The beach is my favorite place to be. I love to relax on the beach. Green reminds me of plants that are in the ocean. Orange and pink remind me of the sun in the morning.

I think peace is a quiet place like a doctor’s office. I don’t hear anything and I can concentrate on what the doctors are saying. The colors like yellow, red, and green remind me of the colorful foods I eat with my family and alone. Blue is peaceful because it’s like the pool in El Salvador. I liked the water there because it was clean and really blue.

	Peace reminds me of waves floating in the sand. Peace feels like I am swimming on a hot day, because floating is relaxing. On a warm sunny day, I feel like I am snuggled up in a warm blanket. I feel peaceful on a mountain on a cold day with a friend. The light breeze makes me feel calm.

Curls are like slow calm waves to me. Yellow, turquoise and light green are peaceful because they remind me of sunny days with no clouds. The dark teal background is like a peaceful calm night.

Light is peace to me because if there were no sunshine, we could not see in the dark. My favorite color is blue like the sky. Peace is like looking at the birds in the sky and imagining that I could fly with them. A turtle is peaceful to me because turtles take their time to get to places. Dark colors are peaceful because at night, you can’t hear a sound. Swirls are peaceful to me because they look like ice cream that I enjoy eating.

	My Peaceful Collage The dark colors are peaceful. They remind me of my family watching the sun set and the colors my dad wore. I remember one day my family was watching the sky turn dark blue. The green reminds me of the times when my mom, dad, brothers and me were outside having fun.

	My Peaceful Place The most relaxing places to me are my bedroom and the park. My bedroom color is a peaceful pink. It’s a place where I can take a nap and do my homework without my brothers bothering me. At the park, I like walking through the grass in the sun on a hot day. Also, I am relaxed when I sit under a tree at the park and read a book.
