Kindergarten Word Walls and Sight Words
Classrooms have word walls in which teachers list the high-frequency words that are the most common in English. The word walls are to be used as a resource for students to use during reading and writing. These sight words often do not follow regular phonics patterns. For many children, they must come in contact with these words many times before they can read them, and even more times before they can spell them properly. It is important to hold children accountable for the spelling of these words. Often, teachers send copies of the word walls home for students to refer to while they are writing. These are the sight words students are expected to have mastered by the end of the year.
