Stream Team is Monitoring our Local Stream at Forest Oak!

One focus of the Stream Team at Forest Oak Middle School is to make students aware of their place in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. We find ourselves in the Bay's watershed and trace our local stream to the Bay. Once we have found our place in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, we focus on our local stream.

We use the Hands On Save Our Streams Curriculum from the Izaak Walton League and the Choices and Challenges curriculum from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

The Stream Team monitors our local stream behind the school. Students perform chemical tests: (nitrate, dissolved oxygen, and PH). More importantly, students periodically survey the stream for animal life. Students categorize the macroinvertebrates found in the water to determine the health of our stream.

We enjoy this activity. See how we're having fun?

1. Getting into the stream.

2. Using our nets to catch macroinvertebrates.

3. Data on Water Quality and Temperature

4. Testing for PH level

5. Dissolved Oxygen Test

6. Analyzing Macroinvertebrates
