Forest Oak has been involved in the Shad Raise and Release
Program sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Fish and Wildlife for
the past 2 years. The movement to help restore shad by raising them in hatcheries
is regarded as highly important for a number of reasons. Primarily, scientists
are concerned about the scarcity of spawning stock in the rivers of the Chesapeake
Bay's watershed. Raising shad in hatcheries ensures a higher rate of survival
for the eggs and larvae of the few remaining brood (spawning) fish. Eighth-grade
students raise the shad larvae in our classroom!
Shad Projects:
- Raising shad in the classroom
- Fishing for shad in order to help with the egg fertilization
- Releasing shad in the Potomac
