Forest Oak students tell how they see their role in protecting the Chesapeake Bay:
by Cameron I., 10/98
My role in the bay, now that I have stopped and really absorbed all the land, air,
and water the bay and its islands have to offer me is to see what has happend to the
bay and what might happen to it in the future if we keep polluting its waters.
Also I want to learn about the plants, animals and the different habitats.
Lastly, my role is to try and convince as many people to do things, like using less water
TO SAVE THE BAY.
by Joelle R., 10/98
My role in the Chesapeake Bay is to love it with all my heart and care for it.
There are so many good things out here and while we are here why not save it?
What's this life for? Are we here only to destroy this earth or are we here to save it?
When the Bay dies, all the little critters including our hearts die too.
I love the bay and anyone who tries to mess around with it needs to leave the bay,
and their lives deserve to be thrown in the Clivus along with the mummy rat.
by Laura S., 10/98
My role in the Bay's watershed is almost insignificant.
I can't fix my family, my community, my government or the Bay.
But maybe if I start with myself - using less water daily, recycling, and being grateful,
my family will notice. And maybe my family will change. And if we change, perhaps we
will influence our community and it will change. And if my community changes, maybe the
government will notice and change too. But if I don't start, if I don't respect, value
and preserve the Bay, my family, my community, and my government wouldn't start noticing
the Bay. We are the beginning.

My role in the Chesapeake Bay is only to save it.
As I see it, in 50 years Fox and Clump and House and all the other islands that
are in the Bay will be gone. This place (Fox) is so cool!
I want to be able to come back here when I am older and still see this island and
all the others here.
As for the Bay's water, I think all of the pollution is gross and unbelievable.
Mark just caught a fish and it was sick. Why it was sick is simple. When it all comes
down to it we over harvest and pollute the bay. Then we complain that there is no
seafood or anything good coming out of the bay. Well, it's our fault!
In the marsh today we went exploring and all of this pollution and garbage was there!
Unbelievable. We are in the middle of nowhere and yet there is still the shocking
reality of all the pollution that goes into the bay.
Now that we have explored Fox Island and some of the other islands around here,
I hope to take a stand and protect the Chesapeake Bay in every way I can.
Remember, a little bit of love can go a long way!!!
